A survey of world cultures would not be complete without an exploration of some of the major conflicts in Africa. This study is a creative and engaging way to look at both the conflicts in Rwanda and in South Africa.
Lesson Plan Overview
Begin your study of Africa by examining the Tutsi and Hutu tribes and what roles they played in Rwanda. Learn more about the effects that manifested when the Dutch selected one tribe to rule over the other.
Take an in-depth look at the Rwandan Genocide of the 1990’s and see how the World reacted and assisted. Examine the stories of the genocide using the film Hotel Rwanda.
Next, examine the role of apartheid in South Africa and then look at how the spread of AIDS originated from that region.

Use the engaging PowerPoint slideshows with a quiz based on information in each lesson to capture student interest and assess students’ comprehension. Use the interactive “Jeopardy” game to review the entire unit and then, present your test on Africa.
This easily comprehendible and manageable overview on Rwanda and South Africa is just perfect for middle school students who are just beginning to prepare for an in depth study of history. Its focus on note-taking skills and knowledge of past historical events to build on future events is just what students in grades 6-9 need in order to have them better prepared to meet the demands of the Common Core.
NOTE: To use the “Jeopardy” game, open the file in Microsoft PowerPoint, choose the Begin Slideshow option. Ask students to select the category and amount for which they want to play. Click on the amount and a question will appear. To see if they answered correctly, click that same box again and the answer will appear.
There is no way to reset the game once it has begun. You would have to close the file and re-open it to begin again.
