The Chinese language has several words for “good luck”. The most commonly used are 好运【hǎoyùn=good luck】,幸运【xìngyùn= good fortune, good luck, lucky】and 福【fú= good luck, good fortune, blessing, happiness】.

The phrase “good luck” in Chinese is often used to bring in the New Year, or to wish someone well on exams, job interviews, etc.

To wish someone good luck, you can say:

我【wǒ=I】 祝【zhù=wish】 你【nǐ=you】 好运【hǎoyùn=good luck】!

The singular first-person pronoun “I” can also be omitted.

When to Use the Phrase ‘Good Luck’

a. New Year

Example:

Good luck in New Year!

I wish you good luck in New Year!

祝【zhù=wish】 你【nǐ=you】新年【xīnnián=new year】 好运【hǎoyùn=good luck】!

祝 你 新年 好运!

Or

祝【zhù=wish】 你【nǐ=you】 新年【xīnnián=new year】幸运【xìngyùn=good luck】!

祝 你 新年 幸运!

b. Competition or Contest

Example:

Good luck in the competition!

I wish you good luck in the competition!

祝【zhù=wish】 你【nǐ=you】 比赛【bǐsài=competition, contest】 好运【hǎoyùn=good luck】!

祝 你 比赛 好运!

c. Job Interview

Example:

Good luck all of you with your job interviews.

祝【zhù=wish】 你们【nǐmen=you (second person plural)】 求职【qiúzhí=apply for job】 面试【miànshì=interview】 好运【hǎoyùn】。

祝 你们 求职 面试 好运。

d. Exam

Example:

Good luck all of you with your exams.

祝【zhù=wish】 你们【nǐmen=you (second person plural)】 考试【kǎoshì=exam】 好运【hǎoyùn=good luck】。

祝 你们 考试 好运。

Or

祝【zhù=wish】 你们【nǐmen=you (second person plural)】 考试【kǎoshì=exam】幸运【xìngyùn =good luck】。

祝 你们 考试 幸运。

e. Wedding Day

Example:

Dear friends, let’s wish the new couple good luck together.

Dear friends, let’s wish the new couple a blessing life together.

亲爱【qīn’ài=dear】的【de】 朋友们【péngyǒumen=friends】,让【ràng=let】 我们【wǒmén=we】 共同【gòngtóng=joint, together】 为【wèi=for】 这【zhè=this】 对【duì= be directed at】 新人【xīnrén=new couple, bride】 祝【zhù=wish】 福【fú=good luck, blessing, good fortune】 吧【ba】。

亲爱 的 朋友们,让 我们 共同 为 这 对 新人 祝 福 吧。

f. It can also be used as encouraging word.

Example:

Good luck will surely come to you.

你【nǐ=you】一定【yīdìng=surely】 会【huì=will】 有【yǒu=have】 好运【hǎoyùn=good luck】 的【de】。

你 一定 会 有 好运 的。

Or

你【nǐ=you】一定【yīdìng=surely】 会【huì=will】 有【yǒu=have】幸运【xìngyùn =good luck】 的【de】。

你 一定 会 有 幸运 的。
